New Zealand’s coach, Ian Foster, has urged World Rugby to investigate safety matters relating to boot studs following an incident involving Prop Tyrel Lomax during the Springboks match. The concern arises from Lomax sustaining an injury due to a cut, leading to Foster’s worry that specific boot types might pose a higher risk of causing such injuries.
Lomax’s injury is significant, with a substantial cut penetrating into the thigh muscle. Foster highlighted the use of sharp plastic blades on players’ boots as a potential factor contributing to such injuries. Although the incident wasn’t intentional, Foster pointed out that another player, Beauden, also experienced a cut from a similar situation, prompting the need to assess the issue further.
Foster emphasized the importance of safeguarding players’ well-being, stating that they must prioritize player safety. The coach’s concerns underline the need for thorough examination of the equipment being used to prevent injuries of this nature in the future.
