Pope Francis visited South Sudan over a year ago, urging an end to the country’s violence.

Despite his efforts, South Sudan continues to struggle with high levels of crime and conflict.

Historic Visit and Unity Appeal

During his visit in February 2023, Pope Francis joined leaders from the Church of England and the Church of Scotland to advocate for peace.

He emphasized unity among Christians as a means to promote peace in the region.

Persistent Violence and Ethnic Dynamics

South Sudan has faced instability since gaining independence in 2011.

The country is home to over 60 ethnic groups, with the Dinka and Nuer being the largest.

Despite the pope’s call for peace, violence and conflict persist in the region.
