Showrunner Beau DeMayo revealed to Empire Magazine that “X-Men 97” will focus on the X-Men grappling with unexpected challenges in the future.
He explained that Morph’s portrayal as non-binary offers a lighter take on the character and emphasizes an intriguing buddy relationship with Wolverine, a fan favorite.
Revival and Character Reinterpretation
Marvel Studios Animation’s decision to revive “X-Men: The Animated Series” with the upcoming Disney+ series “X-Men 97” has sparked controversy due to the reinterpretation of Morph’s character as non-binary.
Despite having been portrayed as a stereotypically male character in previous comics and series, Morph’s new identity adds depth to the storyline.
Character History and Evolution
Morph, originally introduced as Changeling in the X-Men Adventures #1 comic in 1992, underwent a transformation from an evil nemesis to an ally of the X-Men.
Despite being killed in the pilot episode of “X-Men: The Animated Series,” his character reappeared with a new identity.
However, it was revealed that his revival came with the addition of an evil personality implanted by Mr. Sinister, adding complexity to his storyline.
