Cincinnati, Ohio, is grappling with shock and grief after 23-year-old Rachel Counts was fatally shot in what authorities say was a game of Russian Roulette.
Friends and family describe Counts as lively, quirky, and always at the center of the action — a young woman whose life was tragically cut short.
The Deadly Incident
The incident occurred on October 5, when Counts and another 23-year-old, Omarion Horne, were reportedly playing a card game with their respective partners.
Prosecutors say that during the gathering, Horne pulled out a revolver, removed all but one bullet, and suggested, chillingly, “Let’s play Russian roulette.”
While it is unclear whether Horne first pulled the trigger on himself, authorities allege that he then pointed the gun at Counts and fired, striking her in the chest. Cincinnati Fire Department responded to the 10:45 p.m. call and found Counts suffering from a gunshot wound.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Arrest and Court Proceedings
Horne was arrested the following morning and charged with felony murder, felonious assault, and reckless homicide.
He appeared in Hamilton County Court on Friday, where prosecutors outlined the grim details of the fatal encounter.
Courtroom footage obtained by WLWT5 showed Horne slumping in his seat, head bowed, and later sobbing uncontrollably.
His defense attorney urged the judge for leniency, noting that Horne had no prior criminal record.
Despite this plea, Judge William Mallory set Horne’s bond at $1 million, emphasizing the severity of the charges and the tragic outcome.
Legal Consequences Loom
Prosecutors warn that Horne could face a life sentence if convicted.
A grand jury is scheduled to review the case on Thursday, and additional updates are expected as the legal process unfolds.
Judge Mallory described the case as “a senseless tragedy,” lamenting the fact that a firearm was treated as a toy with fatal consequences.
