Just a day after Halloween, Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller returned to host Saturday Night Live, keeping viewers laughing with a mix of wild sketches and personal anecdotes.
At 38, Teller was in top form as he promoted his latest film, Eternity, while delivering a memorable opening night for the 51st season of the iconic comedy show.
Hungover Hijinks in the Opening Sketch
The evening kicked off with Teller navigating a post-Halloween hangover in a hilarious sketch called What Did I Do Last Night?, hosted by Kenan Thompson’s game show character Gay Fopay.
Teller quipped about consuming “14 White Claws and then eating White Castle,” leaving Thompson to deliver a perfectly timed, “You got a death wish, brother.”
The sketch set the tone for the night, blending absurdity with relatable hangover humor.
A Glimpse into Teller’s Childhood
During his opening monologue, Teller shared stories from his peripatetic upbringing.
Having lived in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Delaware, New Jersey, and Florida before turning 12, he joked about struggling to answer the simple question, “Where are you from?” Photos of him and his sisters dressed as SNL characters, including the Roxbury Guys, added a nostalgic touch.
He also reflected on personal hardships, including losing his home in the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year, using humor to lighten the story: “Based on what happened to the last place I called home, there are fire exits located there, there, there,” he joked.
Hilarious White House Renovations
One of the standout sketches featured Teller as a twin in a Property Brothers spoof, tasked with helping Donald and Melania Trump build a ballroom in the White House.
From gold urns everywhere to hyperbolic budget ranges “between $350 million and infinity,” the sketch poked fun at excess, political absurdity, and the imagined whims of the former president.
Teller’s comedic timing shone through as he navigated the outrageous dialogue, delivering some of the night’s sharpest laughs.
On-Ice Comedy with a Hockey Twist
In another sketch, Teller portrayed a hockey player from the Predators during an NHL promotional segment, only to be repeatedly thrown off by the awkward phrasing of his lines.
“I’m a predator in my community?” he protested, creating a hilarious running gag that highlighted both his comic instincts and the ridiculousness of the sketch’s premise.
Mysterious Wives and Tinder Antics
Teller also starred in a mock Netflix trailer featuring three men whose wives had mysteriously vanished—only to reveal mundane explanations.
He then jumped into a sketch as a Tinder user, adding modern dating humor to the night’s varied comedy offerings.
Newsroom Chaos and Detective Confusion
Other sketches had Teller playing a news anchor in a chaotic newsroom and a police detective fielding increasingly bizarre questions about his comic book Gargirl.
His growing frustration added a relatable layer to the absurd comedy, as reporters ignored the serious murder case to discuss his fictional creation.
Waiter Shenanigans and Dining Room Humor
In a restaurant sketch, Teller and a fellow waiter flirted with a customer while pranking her date, tossing salad and delivering pun-filled one-liners like, “Bruschetta about it.”
The sketch leaned into physical comedy and playful wordplay, keeping audiences engaged and laughing throughout.
Brandi Carlile Delivers Musical Highlights
Grammy-winning singer Brandi Carlile returned as the musical guest for the fourth time, performing Church & State and later Human.
Her performances added a musical balance to the night’s comedy, showing that SNL remains as much about music as laughs.
SNL Continues to Blend Humor with Reality
From personal anecdotes to political satire, Miles Teller’s hosting highlighted his versatility, balancing absurd sketches with heartfelt moments about family, childhood, and real-life challenges.
With new episodes airing live on NBC and Peacock, SNL’s post-Halloween energy promises plenty more laughs in the season ahead.
