Lewis Hamilton has opened up about the pressures of his first season at Ferrari, admitting that he needs to “unplug more” from the relentless grind of Formula 1.
The 41-year-old has faced a challenging year with the Scuderia, highlighted by his retirement at last weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix.
Ferrari Chairman Criticises Work Ethic
The difficult afternoon in Sao Paulo, where both Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc retired, prompted comments from Ferrari chairman John Elkann.
Elkann told the pair to “focus on driving and talk less,” noting that the team sits fourth in the constructors’ championship.
While some interpreted the remarks as criticism of Hamilton’s commitment, the seven-time world champion had a different take.
Hamilton Stresses the Need to Unplug
Speaking ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Hamilton insisted that his real challenge is learning to switch off rather than working harder.
“I wake up thinking about it, and I go to sleep thinking about it, and I even think about it in my sleep,” he said. “
If anything, I need to focus on being able to unplug more.
It’s been a really heavy year, probably the busiest I’ve ever had.
I’ve spent more time at the factory than I ever have before.”
Respect for Elkann’s Passion
Hamilton also revealed that Elkann had given him a heads-up about the comments.
Far from being offended, he expressed understanding for the chairman’s intensity and passion.
“I know where John’s intentions are,” Hamilton explained.
“We speak several times a week, and it’s all about bringing the team together.
We’re all deep in it. The passion just runs so deep, and I can never fault someone for that.”
Tough Season with Few Highs
This season has been one of Hamilton’s hardest.
With three races remaining, he has yet to reach the podium and currently sits sixth in the driver standings—76 points behind Leclerc.
Despite the setbacks, speculation around his future with Ferrari has begun to swirl.
Optimism for the Future
Even amid the challenges, Hamilton remains optimistic about the long-term potential of the team.
“There’s so much to do and learn,” he said.
“It’s tough when you’re working so hard for something and then you fall back a few steps.
You just have to get back up and try again the next time.
I’ve backed this team 100% and I back myself 100%. When we get things right, it’s going to be amazing.
I can’t wait for that moment, and I truly believe it will happen.
I’m not losing sight of that, even on the difficult days.”
