The music world is in mourning as Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the iconic bassist of The Stone Roses, has passed away at the age of 63.
The sad news was shared by his brother Greg on Facebook, who wrote, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother. Gary Mani Mounfield RIP.”
He added in the comments, “Reunited with his beautiful wife Imelda.”
Mani reportedly died at his home in Heaton Moor, Stockport, after collapsing from a seizure. Although paramedics were called, sources say they were unable to revive him.
Heartbroken Friends and Family
Word of Mani’s death reached close friends and fellow musicians quickly.
Noel and Liam Gallagher were informed just hours before Greg’s public announcement, leaving them “absolutely heartbroken.”
His passing comes only two years after the death of his wife, Imelda, who lost her battle with cancer.
Imelda, who had twin sons, was diagnosed with bowel cancer three years ago.
Fans and fellow musicians alike have been paying tribute.
Ian Brown, lead singer of The Stone Roses, simply wrote on X, “REST IN PEACE MANI X.” Liam Gallagher shared his grief, calling Mani his hero and expressing his devastation over the loss.
Gary’s nephew also posted an emotional message about Mani being reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Imelda.
A Final Project Announced
Just six days before his death, Mani had announced an intimate conversation tour on The Stone Roses’ official website.
The tour, scheduled across the UK between September 2026 and June 2027, would have seen him share memories from the band’s legendary career—from the 1990 Spike Island gig to the band’s comeback stadium tour.
The tour description promised fans a nostalgic journey: “‘He’ll remember ‘Fools Gold’, Wembley Stadium, Ally Pally, court cases, bucket hats, Adidas, ‘Screamadelica’, and the ‘Second Coming’. It’s What The World Is Waiting For.”
A Life Dedicated to Music
Mani, born and raised in Manchester, left school at 16 to chase a career in music.
He rose to fame in the 1980s with The Stone Roses, playing on both of their albums until the band’s first split in 1996.
He later joined Primal Scream, before leaving in 2011 to help reform The Stone Roses.
His public appearances had been rare, with his last sighting at the funeral of Ricky Hatton in Manchester Cathedral just last month.
During the recording of The Stone Roses’ second album, Second Coming, Mani met his future wife Imelda.
The couple later became deeply involved in charity work, raising funds for institutions like The Christie Hospital and Maggie’s Centre through auctions and events, often featuring high-profile items from celebrities such as David Beckham and Oasis.
Tributes from Fans and the Music Community
Social media has been flooded with heartfelt tributes.
Fans remembered him as one of the greats of the Manchester music scene: “R.I.P Mani. One of the greats. Such a shock and a massive shame,” wrote one fan.
Rowetta from Happy Mondays shared her love and condolences for Mani and his family, expressing how much he would be missed.
Mani’s life and career left an indelible mark on British music.
From pioneering the Madchester sound to inspiring generations of musicians, his influence remains unforgettable.
What’s Next?
Though the world mourns his loss, Mani’s music and legacy will continue to live on.
Fans may now find comfort in revisiting The Stone Roses’ albums, reliving his unforgettable basslines, and celebrating the joy he brought to stages and lives across the globe.
