Rumor has it that Arsenal defender Ben White might be eyeing a surprising return to the England national team.

This comes in the wake of Gareth Southgate’s departure from his role as head coach.

White, who is just 26, made headlines when he opted out of international selection in March, just before England’s friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

His decision to step away from the national team had been brewing for almost two years, largely due to a clash with Southgate’s assistant, Steve Holland.

The fallout reportedly began during England’s World Cup campaign in Qatar in November 2022.

According to reports, Holland questioned White’s enthusiasm for football in a conversation with Kyle Walker about Manchester City’s performance and then turned to White about Arsenal’s recent results.

White’s alleged inability to answer led Holland to suggest he lacked interest in the game, a remark made in front of the team.

Departure and Public Reaction

White’s frustration with the public nature of the conversation was reportedly more significant than the comment itself.

He had left the World Cup camp just a day after England’s 3-0 victory over Wales, with the FA announcing his departure on November 30.

White’s Attitude Towards Football

White has openly admitted that he wasn’t a football fan growing up and doesn’t follow the sport closely.

In 2021, he stated, “I never watched football when I was younger, and I still don’t now.

I know Patrick Vieira was a great player, but I wouldn’t know the details.

I’m too busy and prefer to watch myself for analysis rather than other matches.”

The Future of England Management

With Southgate and Holland now gone, White is reportedly contemplating rejoining the national team.

As for who might replace Southgate, the list of potential candidates includes Newcastle’s Eddie Howe, Under-21 manager Lee Carsley, and former Chelsea managers Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino.

It looks like England could be in for a significant shake-up both on and off the field.
