Russian authorities have blocked the account of Alexander Ovechkin, one of the highest-paid hockey players globally, due to an unpaid debt.

The Washington Capitals star owes 49,000 rubles, approximately $540, in unpaid taxes in Russia. This action was taken by the Russian tax authorities as a consequence of the outstanding debt.

Ovechkin’s Earnings and Endorsements

Despite his substantial income, Ovechkin has encountered this financial issue in Russia. He earns around $12.5 million annually from his contract with the Washington Capitals.

Additionally, he receives an extra $5 million from endorsements with major brands like Nike, Coca-Cola, and Gillette.

Business Ventures in Russia

Ovechkin also has significant business interests in Russia. He owns an international hockey academy named after himself and operates Russian Machine LLC, a company that sells products wholesale.

Registered as an individual entrepreneur, Ovechkin’s company deals in the production and sale of clothing, sporting goods, and other sports-related items.

Despite his successful business ventures, Ovechkin has accumulated a debt of 49,093 rubles.

Tax Authorities’ Action

The Federal Tax Service in Russia has blocked Ovechkin’s individual entrepreneur account due to the unpaid taxes. This decision was promptly communicated to the bank, as reported by Mash.

The blocking of his account underscores the strict measures taken by Russian authorities to enforce tax compliance, even for high-profile individuals like Ovechkin.
