Bon Secours Mercy Health is clear in its stance: “We do not and will not perform direct or elective abortions,” stated Richmond in an email to CNA.

The healthcare provider emphasizes a commitment to preserving life whenever possible.

However, according to section 47 of their directives, there is allowance for lifesaving treatment even if it indirectly results in the death of the unborn child.

This exception applies when treating serious medical conditions that endanger the pregnant woman’s life.

The directives specify that treatments aimed at curing serious conditions of the pregnant woman are permitted, even if they unavoidably lead to the death of the unborn child.

This includes procedures like the removal of a woman’s fallopian tube in cases of ectopic pregnancy, where the intent is solely to save the mother’s life.

Clarification on Indirect Consequences

Doctors clarify that such procedures, though leading indirectly to the death of the unborn child, are not categorized as abortions.

The primary objective remains the preservation of the mother’s life during medical emergencies.

Handling Miscarriages and Emergency Situations

Similarly, medical intervention following a miscarriage is not considered abortion since the unborn child is already deceased.

In emergency scenarios, Bon Secours Mercy Health providers are expected to adhere to these directives and standard medical practices in good faith.
