Cheryl Hines defends her husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr during tense exchange on The View in New York after hosts press her on his political role

Cheryl Hines didn’t exactly get the chat she was hoping for when she appeared on The View.

Instead of discussing her new book, the actress found herself in the middle of a heated exchange about her husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who currently serves as the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services under the Trump administration.

The Curb Your Enthusiasm star recently sat down with Billy Bush to reflect on that fiery interview, and she admitted it played out pretty much how she expected — though she couldn’t help but wish for a different outcome.

“They Just Wanted to Grill Me About Bobby”

During her conversation with Bush, Hines confessed that she had gone on The View to promote her book Unscripted, but the hosts had other plans.

“I was actually hoping it was going to be more personal on The View,” she said.

“But it was what it was. They just wanted to grill me about Bobby.”

Bush, known for his blunt style, asked if she could tell when people hadn’t actually read her book.

Cheryl didn’t hesitate: “Yes. I don’t think the ladies on The View asked me one question about it. But, you know, that’s okay.”

The Heated Exchange That Took Over the Segment

What began as a polite discussion quickly turned into a tense back-and-forth when host Sunny Hostin began pressing Hines about her husband’s qualifications.

Hostin didn’t hold back, calling Kennedy “the least qualified” person to ever lead the Department of Health and Human Services.

That comment didn’t sit well with Cheryl, who immediately jumped to her husband’s defense.

“He has dedicated his career to suing big corporations because of toxins that have been affecting people’s health,” she said.

“He sued Monsanto over Roundup causing cancer. He sued Dupont. He sued Exxon. He’s fought for people’s health for years.”

But Hostin doubled down. “Respectfully,” she said, “your husband is the least qualified health secretary in history.”

Cheryl shot back, “Less qualified than an economist?”

“I think he is less qualified,” Hostin replied firmly, drawing applause from the audience as she accused Kennedy of spreading “misinformation, chaos, and confusion.”

“May I Finish?” — Cheryl Snaps Back

As Cheryl tried to explain her point about COVID-era information, Hostin cut her off again, saying, “He’s connected circumcision to autism.”

That interruption was the last straw. Cheryl, visibly frustrated, snapped back, “May I finish?” — a moment that quickly went viral online.

Despite the tension, Hines remained composed through most of the exchange, using humor to soften her responses.

Still, it was clear she had hoped for a conversation focused on her work, not her husband’s politics.

Sara Haines Defends Cheryl After the Episode

While the episode sparked debate among viewers, co-host Sara Haines later came to Cheryl’s defense.

Speaking on The View’s Behind the Table podcast, Haines praised Hines for showing up and holding her own in a tough environment.

“I think she did a great job,” Haines said. “She came to a table where her husband has been a hot topic for a long time, and I commended her for just showing up.”

Haines also pointed out that Cheryl’s comedic background helped keep the tone from spiraling completely.

“Her humor was a good buffer because she joked through tough questions,” she added.

A Reminder of Why Opposing Views Matter

Haines went on to explain that The View thrives on diverse opinions, even when things get uncomfortable.

“We want people with different views at our table,” she said. “Sometimes it gets tense, but that’s part of what makes the show work.”

For Cheryl, though, it was a reminder that promoting a book while married to one of the most controversial figures in politics is never going to be simple.

Still, she handled the moment with poise — proving that sometimes, even when the questions sting, staying calm and quick-witted can make all the difference.
