Fans Kill President of Colombian Club Tigres FC After Home Defeat

The president of Colombian second division football club, Tigres FC, Edgar Paez, tragically lost his life following his team’s home defeat on Saturday, September 23, as confirmed by the club in an official statement.

After Tigres FC’s 3-2 loss to Atletico FC, Paez was driving home alongside his daughter when a harrowing incident occurred. Two unidentified assailants on a motorbike approached them near the stadium, and Paez was fatally shot.

Thankfully, his daughter emerged from the ordeal unharmed. The local authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation into this tragic murder.

In a statement, the club expressed its deep sorrow and shock over the event, highlighting Paez’s unwavering commitment to the team and his significant contributions to the development of sports in the region. His impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him is described as indelible.

Fernando Jaramillo, President of the Major Division of Colombian Professional Football (DIMAYOR), which oversees professional football leagues in the country, mourned the loss of Edgar Paez.

Jaramillo noted Paez’s qualities of respecting his friends, expressing strong yet respectful views, and his profound love for the sport of football, which resonated with all passionate football enthusiasts.

As a mark of respect for Paez, the football association announced that there will be a minute’s silence observed during the next two rounds of matches.

Regrettably, this tragic incident is not the first of its kind in Colombia, where lives have been lost due to football-related violence.

On July 2, 1994, former Colombia defender Andres Escobar was fatally shot in the aftermath of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. It is believed that Escobar’s tragic death was a retaliation for scoring an own goal that contributed to the team’s elimination from the tournament.

Similarly, on January 8, 2006, Elson Becerra, a member of the squad that helped Colombia win the 2001 Copa America, was shot in a nightclub in his hometown of Cartagena.
