On Friday, February 18, five persons died in a structural fire in Nonqubela Site B in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.
Jermaine Carelse, a spokesperson for the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, said an alarm about an informal structure on fire in Bhemye Crescent came through at 1:50 p.m.
“The Lansdowne Road Fire Station team arrived quickly and discovered a structure completely engulfed in flames,” Carelse said.
The fire was swiftly put out by the firefighters. The occupants, unfortunately, did not get it out alive.
The bodies of five people – who are yet to be identified – were discovered. They had suffered fatal burn wounds.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) took over the scene at 3:15.
In an unrelated incident, a fire broke out along Chapman’s Peak after 18:00 on Thursday evening. Table Mountain National Park and the City’s Fire and Rescue Service sent two helicopters to help suppress the fire.
The fire was contained at approximately 19:55 with no injuries reported. The helicopters returned to base and fire crews mopped up the area.
