For a moment on Tuesday, Washington felt like it was holding its breath.
The political world was already on edge as Congress prepared a major push to release the long-sealed Jeffrey Epstein files — and then suddenly, Hakeem Jeffries’ name got dragged straight into the spotlight.
The Democratic leader found himself fielding questions about an old email suggesting Epstein had been invited to a fundraiser on his behalf.
The timing couldn’t have been worse, and Jeffries wasted no time making his position clear: he says he’s never met the man.
Jeffries Pushes Back as Questions Heat Up
Jeffries didn’t mince words when speaking with CNN.
He said he had “no recollection” of any outreach to Epstein and insisted he’s never spoken to, met, or knowingly interacted with him.
His denial came just as President Trump prepared to sign a new bill that would release the trove of Epstein documents to the public — a move he once resisted but now appears to embrace.
And of course, Trump couldn’t resist chiming in.
He claimed Epstein’s circle was “all Democrats,” a line he repeated multiple times throughout the day.
The Email That Sparked It All
At the center of this latest uproar is a 2013 note allegedly sent to Epstein by Dynamic SRG, a consulting firm that worked with Jeffries at the time.
The email introduced Jeffries as “one of the rising stars” in New York politics — even calling him “Brooklyn’s Barack.”
It also extended what seemed to be an invitation to get involved in an upcoming dinner.
Epstein had already been a convicted sex offender for several years by then, which only heightened the intensity of the backlash.
Republicans on the House Oversight Committee seized on the revelation immediately, questioning whether Jeffries has been forthcoming.
Jeffries’ office has yet to release additional details.
Another Democrat Drawn In: Stacey Plaskett Faces Her Own Scrutiny
Jeffries wasn’t the only Democrat feeling the heat.
Delegate Stacey Plaskett of the U.S. Virgin Islands also ended up in the crosshairs.
New documents revealed that Plaskett exchanged texts with Epstein during a 2019 congressional hearing involving Michael Cohen.
Plaskett said she was simply responding to a constituent — and emphasized she didn’t seek “advice” from him, nor did she need any.
Her explanation didn’t stop House Republicans from attempting to censure her, though she ultimately avoided the reprimand by a narrow vote.
Congress Takes a Rare United Stand on Releasing the Files
In a shocking twist, both chambers of Congress — divided on almost everything — came together to pass the Epstein Files Transparency Act with overwhelming support.
The Senate even approved it by unanimous consent, which hardly ever happens these days.
Despite months of battling with House Republicans about exactly how much to make public, Trump is expected to sign the bill and clear the way for the Justice Department to release the full cache of documents.
According to White House insiders, Trump sees this as an opportunity to spotlight prominent Democrats who may have crossed paths with Epstein.
Trump Shifts His Tone and Embraces the Push for Transparency
After railing against some of his own party members over the weekend, Trump suddenly flipped positions and declared that releasing the files was the right move.
On Truth Social, he insisted he has “nothing to hide,” labeling the controversy a “Democrat hoax.”
He pointed out that his administration has already handed over thousands of pages tied to the Epstein investigation.
And, in typical fashion, he hinted the upcoming disclosures might politically damage figures like Bill Clinton, Reid Hoffman, and Larry Summers.
The Long Shadow of Epstein Still Lingers
Trump’s own ties to Epstein have resurfaced repeatedly over the years — including flight logs showing the former president flew on Epstein’s jet four times in the 1990s.
And just last week, his name popped up again in a large document release from the House Oversight Committee.
Trump maintains that he distanced himself from Epstein “decades ago” and had no knowledge of the disgraced financier’s crimes.
But with the impending release of the full file trove, every politician who ever appeared in Epstein’s orbit — however briefly — is bracing for whatever may come next.
