South African motorists face uncertain fuel price changes as June approaches with oil prices rising and rand fluctuating

If you’ve been keeping an eye on South Africa’s fuel prices lately, you might be hoping for some good news.

Earlier this month, motorists in Mzansi enjoyed a welcome drop in petrol and diesel costs.

But as June draws closer, things are starting to look a bit more uncertain—and unfortunately, the prices might even creep back up.

Why Prices Dropped Earlier This Month

The initial price drops were mainly thanks to two factors: a lower Brent crude oil price and a stronger rand.

When oil gets cheaper globally, and the local currency holds its value well against the dollar, it usually means savings at the pump for South African drivers.

Back in early May, these conditions combined nicely, resulting in noticeable decreases: petrol went down by about 22 to 23 cents per litre, diesel dropped
