The Johns Hopkins Healthcare Design Competition invites student-led teams from all over the world to submit their innovative health-related solutions.
The competition is an exciting opportunity to celebrate impactful design in healthcare across various fields.
Eligibility Requirements
To participate, your project needs to focus on a healthcare-related challenge.
There are four distinct categories or “tracks” you can submit your design under:
- Designs of Solutions for Advanced Health Systems
- Global Health/Humanitarian Design
- Healthcare Apps/Digital Health
- Post-Surgical Infection Management
Here are a few key eligibility points:
- Your project should have been started after January 1st, 2023.
- Only full-time students are eligible to participate. This includes undergraduate, masters, doctoral, and professional degree students (such as MBA, MD, etc.).
- The project must be student-driven, and teams must consist of more than one full-time student.
- Postdoctoral research projects or those funded significantly (more than $100K) are not eligible.
- Projects run by startups or faculty are also ineligible.
You can submit multiple unique projects if you’re part of different teams.
Competition Tracks
The competition is divided into four categories:
- Designs of Solutions for Advanced Health Systems
- Global Health/Humanitarian Design
- Healthcare Apps/Digital Health
- Post-Surgical Infection Management
Each track offers specific awards to the top projects:
- 1st Prize: $5,000
- 2nd Prize: $3,000
- 3rd Prize: $1,000
Design Brief Guidelines
The Design Brief is a crucial part of your submission.
It’s a two-page summary of your project, written for an audience that may not be familiar with your clinical space.
Here’s what you should include:
Problem Description (25%)
Explain the healthcare problem you’re addressing, the background, and why it requires a better solution.
Solution Concept(s) (25%)
Present your solution, how it works, and why it’s the right approach to tackle the problem.
Reduction to Practice (25%)
Include any experimental results, renderings, or photos of your prototype. This is where you demonstrate that your idea can work in practice.
Pathway to Implementation (25%)
Describe the next steps for your project.
How will it be implemented to make a real-world impact?
Key Dates and Submission Timeline
- January 19: Submit your two-page proposals
- March 10: Finalists will be notified
- April 12: The final round will take place virtually
